Artist Statement

"In art history, the pear has customarily symbolized the womb and/or birth. I, too, have used the pear in many of my paintings and drawings to represent creation and life. 'The Mourners' are sculptures from the Tomb of Jean de France by Duc de Berry (circa 1453). Effigies placed on top of the sarcophagus, these figures are wrapped in voluminous cloaks, their faces hidden.
