Museum of... Remembrance Artist Statement "In art history, the pear has customarily symbolized the womb and/or birth. I, too, have used the pear in many of my paintings and drawings to represent creation and life. 'The Mourners' are sculptures from the Tomb of Jean de France by Duc de Berry (circa 1453). Effigies placed on top of the sarcophagus, these figures are wrapped in voluminous cloaks, their faces hidden. "Juxtaposing symbols depicting the beginning and the end, life and death, creativity and barrenness, the four works comprising Museum of...Remembrance represent our passage through life, culminating in our own mortality." |
