As a portrait painter, Cole is fascinated by the human face. In studying works of earlier artists, she finds much attention to the dignity and nobility of humanity in the figures presented in great works of art. Rembrandt and Vermeer, in particular, have impressed Cole with a view of a split-second looks that tells more than words can convey about character, mood, and feeling of both the subject and the artist.

Started in 1991 with a collection of drawings based on Old Master paintings and drawings, "Old Masters/New Visions" has become an ongoing series of works in which Cole seeks out and examines subject matter relating to the works of other artists.
